Mrinal Rana is a esteemed consultant ophthalmologist based in Midlands, UK. He specializes in the comprehensive management of routine, complex and refractive cataract surgeries using premium intraocular lenses and management of astigmatism. He also expertly manages conditions affecting cornea and external eye that include: Keratoconus (halted by cross linking and its visual rehabilitation), ocular surface degenerative (including pterygium and pinguecula), inflammatory (such as peripheral ulcerative keratitis, scleritis, pemphigoid and episcleritis) disorders, ocular surface carcinomas and Dry eye diseases. In addition to his private practice, he holds an affiliation with the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, where he leads the Corneal service.
Mrinal has over 2 decades of ophthalmology experience and an impressive educational history. Post his MBBS from India he undertook his general ophthalmic training in UK from renowned centres in Leicester, Liverpool and Birmingham and received MRCOphth and FRCOphth from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He expanded his acumen by undergoing 2 corneal fellowships in Birmingham and Cambridge to expand his clinical and surgical competence in cornea and external eye disease. Additionally, Mrinal holds a postgraduate diploma in refractive cataract surgery from Ulster University and thereafter completed his certificate of laser refractive surgery from Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
Within his NHS practice, he has not only revamped the Corneal Service to a world class standard, he has established and improved best interest care pathways, where patients with mental capacity issues would be supported holistically and in a more organised way. He has also revamped the regional Cross Linking Service, expanding to provide paediatric cross linking and also established it into a Nurse led service. He has also been the trailblazer to start bilateral immediate sequential cataract surgery (BSCS), an innovative approach that is currently offered by only a select few centers worldwide and he now offers in his private practice as well based on suitability.

Mr. Rana's in-depth understanding of the diverse demographics across the UK enables him to deliver personalised treatment tailored to individual patients and their needs. He is also a polyglot, proficient in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi, allowing him to establish meaningful connections and communicate effectively with patients in their native languages. Mr. Rana's compassionate and empathetic approach has earned him praise from patients and also enabled him to be nominated for outstanding service and care awards (OSCA) multiple times over the last 5 years.
He was recently rewarded the Level 1 Clinical Excellence Award for his outstanding service in his NHS practice.

He has published multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts and presented his work at national and international conferences. In addition to teaching ophthalmology trainees, he frequently lectures throughout the UK and around the world.

Work and personal life balance is important to him. In addition to spending time with his family, playing racquet sports, practicing yoga and meditation and traveling to serene destinations, he enjoys musicals and is currently learning salsa and French.

Giving Back
Mrinal is also committed to giving back to the global community and has volunteered twice now at the Khmer Sight Organisation in Cambodia to provide free eye care for patients in the area. He ran camps in the villages and did cataract and pterygium surgery to improve their sight. Recently he led a team of 13 medical professionals who performed more than a 100 surgeries in 4 days.
During COVID he volunteered to help the NHS medical team to support and care for patients suffering with COVID.
